Instructors

Safura Syed

PhD candidate, Registered Dietitian, University of Waterloo - Co-Operative Education

Safura is working towards a PhD in the department of Kinesiology (Aging, Health and Well-being). She is a registered dietitian with experience working in the community and long-term care. Safura completed her BSc. (honours) in Nutrition and Dietetics at Brescia University College, Western University in London. She also holds a MSc in Applied Human Nutrition from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, where she explored the impact of culture on resident-centred care and meal satisfaction. For her PhD dissertation Safura is exploring culturally inclusive menu planning in long-term care.

Paolo Varia

Associate Director, Clinical and Support Services, Regional Municipality of Niagara

Paolo Varias is responsible for directing and defining the quality, standards, and clinical needs of the Seniors Services Division. Before becoming Associate Director, Paolo held several leadership positions in long-term care such as Director of Care and Administrator. He also has a broad knowledge and experience in managing and leading health operations in primary healthcare and public health. He was a former Fellow on Health Policy Development Program (HPDP) and a current surveyor at Canadian Centre for Accreditation (CCA). Paolo is a Registered Nurse and completed his Master of Science in Aging and Health at Queens University. He is currently completing his Master of Management (International Masters for Health Leadership) at Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University.

Whitney Harrison

Manager of Community Support Services, Regional Municipality of Peel

Whitney's passion for person-centred, high quality care led to her taking on a leadership role in Adult Day & Community Support Services (CSS) with the Region of Peel in 2018.  In her current role as Manager of Community Support Services, she ensures that CSS advocates for and delivers person-centred services that align with the current and emerging needs of their clients. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Honours Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Waterloo and completed the long-term care administrator certification in 2016, and in 2021 received her Prosci Certification in Change Management.

Teagan Slot

R.Kin, MSc, PhD, CRSP, CCPE

Tegan Slot is the Lead for Specialized Services with Public Services Health and Safety Association, one of four provincial health and safety associations in Ontario.  Tegan is a Registered Kinesiologist, Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist and holds a Master of Science and PhD in biomechanics and ergonomics.  She takes a collaborative approach to health and safety solutions with a focus on cooperation, connections, and partnerships to achieve meaningful outcomes for public sector workplaces.

Stacey Scaman

Corporate Dietitian, Seasons Care Dietitian Network

Stacey Scaman is a Corporate Dietitian with over 15 years' experience working in LTC.  She supports Dietitians, Nutrition Managers and Management Teams in Long Term Care across Ontario with guidance around clinical nutrition, foodservice, policy development and dietary management.  She has a passion for advocacy and is the recent co-chair of the Ontario Seniors Nutrition & Advocacy Committee (OSNAC) and also leads the Food & Nutrition Advisory Committee (FNAT). 

Lisa Castellan

Human Resources Consultant, Regional Municipality of Niagara

Lisa Castellan is a human resources professional with over 20 years' experience.  Currently, she is a Human Resources Consultant with the Regional Municipality of Niagara supporting Community Services which includes Seniors Services, Homelessness Services, Social Assistance and Employment Opportunities, Children's Services and Housing Services.  She is a strategic business partner achieving business results through effective Human Resources Management and building strong working relationships with client groups.

Liane MacGregor

Management Consultant

A social work professional with 20+ years experience in long-term care, Liane MacGregor currently works as a management consultant with City of Toronto Seniors Services and Long-Term Care division. Liane is dedicated to advancing equitable and inclusive care and services for older adults living in the community and in long-term care, including the innovative projects of CareTO, the Toronto Seniors Strategy and the Leading and Learning with Pride 2SLGBTQI+ Tool Kit.

Elisabeth Catalano-Bon

Registered Social Worker, Region of Peel, Seniors Health and Wellness Village

Elisabeth Catalano-Bon has held numerous roles throughout her career as a Registered Social Worker in the long-term care sector, a social work consultant in private practice, and social worker in community support services. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work and Certificate in Gerontology obtained from Toronto Metropolitan University, a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Concordia University in Chicago.  In 2015, she completed the Advanced System Leadership Program with the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management.

Alicia Marshall

Registered Dietitian, Ontario Seniors Nutrition and Advocacy Committee (OSNAC)

Alicia Marshall is a Registered Dietitian practicing in long-term for over 25 years. She is a BASc graduate of the University of Guelph. Alicia advocates passionately for the improvement of nutrition to enhance the quality of life for those living in LTC.  Alicia is a member of the Ontario Seniors Nutrition & Advocacy Committee and the Canadian Malnutrition Taskforce Long Term Care and Food Working Group.  Food is fuel but it is so much more including social interactions whether in celebration or grief include food and drink across cultures.
